Maths in EYFS / KS1

The approach to maths teaching follows both the EYFS and KS1 national curriculum and focuses upon depth before breadth approach; children focus on one particular area (e.g. numbers to ten) for a sustained period until they are confident with the conceptual understanding before moving on. Children are taught how to make sense of relationships between mathematical concepts and deepen their understanding using objects, pictures, symbols and words. Topics are sequenced in a logical progression that allows children to establish connections and draw comparisons. Oracy is also promoted through maths teaching when encouraging children to explain and reason using mathematical language, encouraging them to think of themselves as mathematicians. Talk is an essential part of every maths lesson and time is allocated to developing confidence with key vocabulary as well as verbal reasoning.
