  • Geography Curriculum:Understanding Our Place in a Changing World

At Fern House School, our geography curriculum is designed to help pupils become curious and explorative thinkers with a diverse knowledge of the world. We aim to inspire a deeper understanding of their local community first, then expand that knowledge to include Britain and the wider world. This foundation of understanding places and how environments shape lives is a core theme throughout all our topics.

Our curriculum encourages students to think like a geographer by developing their geographical skills and knowledge. We want them to develop the confidence to question, observe and measure their surroundings and to analyse and present their findings. Fieldwork skills are a key part of this, and they are developed throughout each year group with opportunities both on and off the school grounds.

We also focus on developing critical thinking skills, giving pupils the ability to ask perceptive questions and to explain and analyse evidence. The curriculum is built around open-ended enquiry questions that encourage pupils to collect and interpret data to make informed decisions. By doing this, we hope to encourage pupils to become resourceful, active citizens who can contribute to and improve the world around them.

Furthermore, our curriculum is designed to enhance pupils' understanding of the modern world and the challenges they face as responsible citizens. We provide opportunities for pupils to reflect on human motivation and behaviours, enabling them to make informed contributions to topical debates.
