Fern House School
Our intent for the history curriculum, supported by the Kapow Primary scheme of work, is to foster a sense of curiosity and creativity in our pupils. We aim to equip them with a complex knowledge of local, national and global history.
Our curriculum is designed to help pupils:
Become Critical Thinkers and Historians: We want our pupils to develop the confidence to think critically, ask questions, and analyse historical evidence. Through an inquiry-based model, children will learn key substantive knowledge by using the disciplinary methods that historians employ to understand the past. They will develop skills to collect evidence from various sources, evaluate their reliability, and present their own conclusions supported by evidence.
Understand Chronology and Substantive Concepts: The curriculum supports pupils in building a chronologically-secure knowledge of history by making connections over time. They will understand the history of Britain as a coherent narrative from the earliest times to the present day. We will introduce key substantive concepts such as empire, civilisation, invasion, and migration, which are revisited and deepened in complexity throughout their time in earlier Steps school, in line with the Kapow spiral curriculum model.
Develop Empathy and a Sense of Place in the World: By studying history, children will appreciate the complexities of people's lives and the diversity of societies. The curriculum will help them develop empathy for others and understand how they fit into the long story of human development. Pupils will explore a variety of historical periods and topics, including "The history of me," "How have explorers changed the world?" "Why did the Romans come to Britain?" and "Why did the Vikings come to Britain?" to understand how people and events of the past have shaped the world we live in today.
Through this approach, Fern House will ensure that pupils meet the end-of-Key Stage attainment targets in the National Curriculum and gain a solid foundation for their future learning.
