GROWING TOGETHER

  • Maths Sticky Skills and Knowledge

Addition: Pupils develop a secure understanding of addition and how quantities interact. Addition is a fundamental skill frequently applied across school, home, community, and future careers. We ensure pupils are confident in various addition scenarios, whether performing mental calculations or utilising calculators and traditional methods. This understanding also serves as a building block for multiplication and the inverse of subtraction.

Subtraction: Subtraction is an integral part of everyday life, making its early development crucial. Proficiency in subtraction enables effective societal engagement, vital for managing money, cooking, travel, time, and countless other daily experiences. While strong addition skills aid in solving subtraction problems, we prioritise pupils' ability to solve these mentally and accurately where possible, before resorting to written or technological aids.

Multiplication: As a foundational tool for advanced mathematical concepts like algebra and calculus, the ability to fluently recall and understand multiplication facts up to and including 12 is paramount. This mastery empowers our pupils to confidently and skilfully tackle more complex mathematical subjects. Fluency and instant recall of multiplication significantly boost a child’s confidence and are essential for numerous daily tasks, both in school and at home – from setting a table for guests to calculating exchange rates or understanding time increments. The pervasive nature of multiplication in everyday life underscores the importance of this skill from a young age.

Division: As pupils mature, they naturally encounter division skills in their daily lives, such as managing money, sharing items, or portioning food. Our aim is to build their confidence in solving real-life division problems, thereby not only enhancing their mathematical subject confidence but also equipping them with practical skills applicable in the wider world.

Money: Given money's imperative role in adult life, we ensure our pupils grasp fundamental monetary concepts and their personal implications. Beyond currency, we educate pupils about spending, saving, debt, loans, income, wages, taxes, and all other essential financial areas. We instil positive messages about timely bill payments, the value of work for earning, and the importance of spending within limits. Crucially, we also guide them in understanding debt and its potential impact on their quality of life.

Time: Daily life is inherently intertwined with time. Most individuals allocate time for tasks and regularly consult watches, electronic devices, and clocks. We ensure our pupils develop a comprehensive understanding of both time-telling and the broader concept of time. Pupils gain proficiency in reading and setting clocks, while also comprehending units of time, their duration, and their relationship to events. We actively support pupils in learning their daily routines by providing clear accounts of the day ahead, which simultaneously builds their understanding of time sequencing. Constant reference to analogue clocks and real-time situations addresses this often-challenging concept directly. Our intention is to fully immerse pupils in the concept of time, enabling them to confidently navigate any time-related challenges they may encounter in the wider world.
