  • Computing Curriculum:Navigating the Digital World Safely and Skilfully

    At Fern House School, we believe that computing is a vital part of both the national curriculum and modern life. Our goal is to equip pupils with the fundamental skills, knowledge, and understanding they'll need for the rest of their lives, both at home and at work. We've developed a bespoke computing curriculum, using the  

    Kapow scheme as a starting point, that engages pupils in a variety of themes through technology. We want to inspire our pupils to be curious, explorative thinkers who can question, observe, and analyse the world around them. We believe this will encourage them to become resourceful and active citizens.  

    Our curriculum focusses on three main areas:


    Developing Foundational Skills

    We aim to make our pupils computer-literate by providing them with a personal Chromebook to use in school and at home. We ensure all pupils have the opportunity to use a range of programs for various purposes across the wider curriculum, not just in dedicated computing lessons. We teach skills like computational thinking, which is essential for effective participation in the digital world. The curriculum is designed to be both accessible and ambitious, ensuring all learners can fully participate and achieve their potential. By using cross-curricular links, we motivate pupils and help them make connections and remember the steps they've been taught.  


    Fostering Digital Citizenship

    We recognise the importance of online safety and make it a priority to educate both pupils and parents about the possible dangers and how to stay safe online. The curriculum includes a dedicated online safety program with lessons on topics like using the internet safely, responsible online communication, understanding facts and opinions, and managing screen time. We also address important issues such as cyberbullying and the ethical implications of modern technology, including the use of artificial intelligence (AI). We teach pupils how to be responsible digital citizens by thinking about the content they share and how to be kind online.  


    Promoting Creativity and Exploration

    Our curriculum encourages creativity through a variety of engaging topics. Pupils will learn to design, build, and test their own creations, from digital rockets to websites and video trailers. We offer hands-on projects, such as creating stop-motion animations and programming music with Scratch. Pupils will also explore historical topics, like the evolution of computers and the code-breaking efforts at Bletchley Park. These projects help them develop skills like sequencing, debugging, and collaborating. We hope to instil the confidence in our pupils to contribute to and improve the world around them.
