For pupils demonstrating the appropriate readiness and aspiration, we offer the opportunity to study for GCSE qualifications in English Language. Achieving a pass in this subject is widely recognised as essential for progression to Level 3 courses, apprenticeships and most college pathways. Our dedicated staff provide targeted support, aiming to secure these vital grades and give our pupils the strongest possible foundation for their academic and career ambitions.

    Grading

The grading scale for most GCSEs in England is from 9 (highest) to 1, with a grade 4 being a standard pass and a grade 5 considered a strong pass.

    English Language:

The GCSE English Language specification is designed to ensure students can read fluently and write effectively using Standard English. It focuses heavily on functional literacy skills, critical analysis of texts and the ability to communicate clearly and coherently in various contexts.

Pupils are assessed on their ability to read and understand a wide range of unseen, high-quality texts drawn from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries.

    Key reading skills assessed include:

    • Critical Reading and Comprehension: Identifying explicit and implicit information, themes, ideas and attitudes.

    • Analysis: Explaining and commenting on how writers use language and structure to achieve effects and influence readers.

    • Comparison and Evaluation: Comparing the ideas, perspectives and methods of two or more texts. Critically evaluating texts and supporting judgments with evidence.

The texts read often include fiction, non-fiction and other writing such as essays, reviews and journalism.
