Supporting Speech, Language & Communication Needs (SLCN)

Speech, language, and communication needs (SLCN) refer to a wide range of difficulties children and young people may experience when communicating. This can include challenges with:

  • Expressing themselves (e.g., finding the right words, forming sentences).
  • Understanding what is being communicated to them (e.g., following instructions, comprehending spoken language).
  • Navigating social communication rules (e.g., turn-taking in conversation, understanding non-verbal cues).

At Fern House School, we are committed to meeting each child's individual SLCN. Our dedicated teachers and teaching assistants are fully aware of their pupils' needs and thoughtfully plan and tailor their support to ensure every child makes meaningful progress.

In addition, we benefit from the expertise of a trained Speech and Language Therapist (SALT). Our SALT provides valuable support and advice, ensuring that our pupils receive specialist guidance to progress in their communication development.
